When I got to the Greenwich Treehouse in the West Village around 8:00, a few NaNoWriMo writers had sequestered themselves in this back room to finish their 50,000-word novels. All of these writers expected to finish by midnight. I interrupted one of their 15-minute sprints to find out how they were doing.

Alexis, a Brooklyn ML, on the far right, said that she'd been doing 15-minute sprints all day, going from 18,000 words to 36,000 words. She still hoped to finish her novel by midnight. Apparently someone named Julia had done 200,000 words this month, 50,000 of them the first day. Alexis and others in this room said that they had relied not on caffeine, but sweets and fried foods to get them through the month.
